Jesus turns water into wine: a miracle of provision

water into wine: a miracle of provision

I had often wondered why Jesus bothered turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana of Galilee (John 2:1-11). Surely, it was not a life or death situation. They definitely didn’t need wine for survival. Worst case scenario, the guests would have gone home grumpy and annoyed at the host for not meeting their expectations.

In my myopic vision, the miracle of water into wine paled in comparison to other miracles such as opening the eyes of the blind, raising the dead, touching and healing the lepers and feeding the multitudes. These other miracles were answers to serious needs. Wine on the other hand, was definitely not a need.

My perspective changed while discussing ‘favorite Jesus miracles’ with a friend. Her favorite miracle is the miracle of water into wine. Through our discussion, God opened the eyes of my understanding to see that it was a glorious miracle of provision. Through the miracle, Jesus showcased God as Jehovah Jireh (God our Provider) and as El Shaddai (The All Sufficient One, God Almighty).

Jesus said to His disciples, “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete” (John 16:24). His desire is to provide for us. He would not have said so if He didn’t mean so. God answers life and death prayers but also provides abundantly for routine and mundane everyday needs. He does so because he loves us and delights in us.

If you have ‘little needs’ that you have not brought to God in prayer, remember that He is your Jehovah Jireh. He is ready to turn your water into wine so that your joy may be full.

The wedding guests at Cana could have survived on water. However, Jesus made their situation sweeter and better by turning their water into wine.

Very well written piece! It opened my eyes to see something new about that event. His desire and faithfulness to meet us at every point of need whether big or small. He is indeed our All Sufficient God – El Shaddai!

The joy od knowing that the little things we ask God for, He provides; gives me the confidence to let go om a daily basis.
your write up on this miracle reminds me of the lyrics of the songwriter “…oh! Qhat needless pain we bear, all because we do not take it to the Lord in Prayer….”
Through your post, I have been reminded again..to take everything to our sufficient God in prayer.
      Thank you

Wao! Your write up reminds that I only need to ask and yield to our Lord Jesus Christ. Matt 7:7. He so much loves us and ready to bring us out from the pit of sin. His arms are always open to welcome us. He so much cares for us. Our Jehova Jireh! Greatest provider. Well done Chizobam. Our dear lord will use you to transform many lives.
